12 simple ways to supercharge your brain

12 simple ways to supercharge your brain

Have you ever felt exasperated when you bumped into someone at the store but absolutely couldn't remember their name? Sure, it happens to all of us.

Despite being the strongest computer on the planet, our brains do lapse. It's hard to blame them really. As humans, we spend much of or existence stuffing our brains with stuff.

No matter how powerful our brains are, they need recuperation time to be kept in shape. Think of it as a tune up for your brain. Skipping brain maintenance is as silly as the person wandering the parking garage because they forgot where they parked. Is that you? Are you that person? If so, fear not; we are all that person at some point.

Now I am not a brain surgeon and I am not going to suggest you do anything surgical or dangerous. I am however an astute student of human behavior so I always look for simple ways to super charge my brain.

Here are some things you can begin doing as soon as today to begin the great brain tune up:

Eat Almonds
Almond is believed to improve memory. If a combination of almond oil and milk is taken together before going to bed or after getting up at morning, it strengthens our memory power. Almond milk is prepared by crushing the almonds without the outer cover and adding water and sugar to it.

Drink Apple Juice
Research from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) indicates that apple juice increases the production of the essential neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain, resulting in an increased memory power.

Sleep well
Research indicates that the long-term memory is consolidated during sleep by replaying the images of the experiences of the day. These repeated playbacks program the subconscious mind to store these images and other related information.

Enjoy simple Pleasures
Stress drains our brainpower. A stress-ridden mind consumes much of our memory resources to leave us with a feeble mind. Make a habit to engage yourself in few simple pleasures everyday to dissolve stress from your mind. Some of these simple pleasures are good for your mind, body and soul.

  • Enjoy music you love
  • Play with your children
  • Appreciate others
  • Run few miles a day, bike or swim
  • Start a blog
  • Take a yoga class or Total Wellness routine

Exercise your mind
Just as physical exercise is essential for a strong body, mental exercise is equally essential for a sharp and agile mind. Have you noticed that children have far superior brainpower than an adult does? Children have playful minds. A playful mind exhibits superior memory power. Engage in some of the activities that require your mind to remain active and playful.

  • Play scrabble or crossword puzzle
  • Volunteer
  • Interact with others
  • Start a new hobby such as blogging, reading, painting, bird watching
  • Learn new skill or a foreign language

Practice Yoga or Meditation
Yoga or Meditation relives stress. Stress is a known memory buster. With less stress, lower blood pressure, slower respiration, slower metabolism, and released muscle tension follows. All of these factors contribute significantly towards increases in our brainpower.

Reduce Sugar intake
Sugar is a non-food. It’s a form of carbohydrate that offers illusionary energy, only to cause a downhill slump once the initial burst has been worn off. Excess intake of sugar results in neurotic symptoms. Excess sugar is known to cause claustrophobia, memory loss and other neurotic disorders. Eat food without adding sugar. Stay away from sweet drinks or excess consumption of caffeine with sugar.

Eat whole wheat
The whole wheat germs contain lecithin. Lecithin helps ease the problem of the hardening of the arteries, which often impairs brain functioning.

Eat a light meal at night
A heavy meal at night causes tossing and turning and a prolonged emotional stress while at sleep. It’s wise to eat heavy meal during the day when our body is in motion to consume the heavy in-take. Eating a light meal with some fruits allows us to sleep well. A good night sleep strengthens our brainpower.

Develop imagination
Greeks mastered the principle of imagination and association to memorize everything. This technique requires one to develop a vivid and colorful imagination that can be linked to a known object. If you involve all your senses - touching, feeling, smelling, hearing and seeing in the imagination process, you can remember greater details of the event.

Control your temper
Bleached food, excess of starch or excess of white bread can lead to nerve grating effect. This results in a violent and some time depressive behavior. Eat fresh vegetables. Drink lots of water and meditate or practice yoga to relieve these toxic emotions of temper and stressful mood swings.

Take Vitamin B-complex
Vitamin B-complex strengthens memory power. Eat food and vegetables high in Vitamin B-complex. Stay away from the starch food or white bread, which depletes the Vitamin B-complex necessary for a healthy mind.

I don't believe these are that tough. If you find yourself increasing stumped, give a couple of these a try.

sari sari

For past 3 weeks,i discovered  what life was made of,and rest was like a fire ball burst inside me,waiting for me to acknowledge =)

   the judgement day

last dec 1 and 2 was the nurse's licensure examination,im one of the thousand aspiring nurse wannabe who took the exam, the 1st day was kinda traumatic, why??i was late because of some stupid reason,i done some erasure in my personal data sheet,i was restless and unease..my assessment in the examination kinda difficult and at same time least average,,on the second day was other story of what nle is all about, the b.o.n was creative in so called therapeutic communication..tagalog translation is badly needed..bahal na si god

   katribu and friendship

my attachment with my barkada is so strong right now, they are part of what i am..i love razel, tala, ace, reydan, japoy, cherry and maernz..life must go on..but friendship must stay..nothing will change..

   love and mending

after the boad exam, i tried to open my heart but i guess im not ready..putting things in perspective and see life the way it should be..my heart is least priority these time..im a better partner if i was able to mend the wounds from the past.

     bacolod adventure

we went to bacolod, with my katribu..the experience was unforgetable..the land where my roots came from..we enjoy the boarding at tala's place,,very accomdating..hehehe

this yuletide season,my sister arrived from cebu after months of wrenching her self to nothingness..she reveal to us that she is already married to a local..my parents went ballistic but we cant blame her,she is under the inhibition of a dose madness called love..mayda want to cover he eyes and ears because of dissapointment..in my opinopn..its her life after all..she is now part of moron society where power of love controls her life..selfish it may seems but she has her own life now..prayers and prayers is all i can give..

boastful dan poral

kaina sang lunch break,my natabu nga asta subong wala ko maimagine nga matabu,si dan kag ang iya latest jowa joined us,after reydan meet him kag ginhatag ang june 2007 question..nagpakapal siya nagupod sa amun,sa part ko i find it awkward..ikaw b tubang mo ang ex mo kag jowa ya,it breaks my heart nagpakapal na lang ko,nagtubang ko sa iya kag naghambal ->

me: musta ka na dan?(my voice is kinda shaking,a presence of pain)

dan:gago (moderate natural voice,he keep on looking on his food and eat as if im

not existing)

me:gago?nga a gago haw?

dan:he immediately change the topic as if im a dust  floating into the air

so i go for his jowa who is eating like a anorexic

me: so ikaw gali si nonoy

nonoy: nod like a western monkey

and they continue their boastful conversation leading by dan poral,he has no moral fiber nor shame on his heart.

so i and continue with my talking to ace, cherry, japoy and nang karen as if we own

the 2nd table

the tension is arising,i feel the cold grasp in my neck after a prehistoric of 10 minutes,

they are done with their stomach development,we go back to cap and both them

dissapeared.

the moral lesson:if situation like this you have to control your feeling and go with

the flow of tension,i point my dissapointment to reydan because he lacks of

thinking, thinking because he forgot to think that tension might arise with me and

his cousin because he is the one who asked his cousin to joined us

,and to dan he is bi with less breeding ,he doesnt thinks what his

jowa might feel and to me,being on that situation its natural to get upset

and burstl like im fireball but its 8 days to go before the board exam,i dont get what he

is trying to prove,if he prove to break my heart,he won but in the end he is only

fooling himself.i dont have to waste thinking about it and to dan i dumped him and its

over for both of us =) this is the end of the rope..i have to let go because i dont have a choice.

Nars

im so excited to watch 'nars' a heartwarming movie,hehehe=0

Indie film "Nars" captures the realities of Filipino nurses

Should I stay or should I go? This is the question facing most Filipino nurses nowadays. This will also be the question that the upcoming movie Nars will attempt to answer.

Jennylyn Mercado, Jodi Sta. Maria, Agot Isidro, Coco Martin, and Jon Avila portray five graduating nursing students who are at a crossroads in their lives and their careers. Their different stories are a cross-section of society's nurses. Each character reflects the Pinoy's aspirations, motives, realities, ambivalence, and fears in becoming a nurse.

During the story conference for Nars held last September 20 at the Thompson Square on Tomas Morato Ave, Q.C., the actors and producers of the movie talked about the country's perennial brain drain.

"We'd like to create a more positive image of nurses. I'd like to tell you that Filipino nurses are the best nurses in the world. They also constitute the biggest nursing force in the world. ‘Yan po ang yaman ng Pilipinas.

"Gusto ring ipakita ng film ang realities and socio-economic situation of the Philippines. Maraming issues ang tutugunan ng film, including domestic violence, gender discrimination in the Philippines, at iba pa."

How did they choose the cast members of Nars?

How did the characters prepare for the roles as nursing students?

"Binigyan kami ng reviewer ni Kuya Carl," reveals Jennylyn Mercado. "Siyempre, yung kilos, saka nagtatanong kami kung ano ang dapat gawin. May mga things na ginagamit ang nurse. Ano ba ang dapat isuot? Ano yung hindi dapat, simple things na makakatulong rin sa movie para ma-portray namin nang maayos yung role."

As for Jodi Sta. Maria, she says that being around real nurses helped prepare her for this role. "Bukod sa reviewer na dapat basahin, nakatulong rin sa akin na ang best friend ko ay isang nurse. Nakita ko siyang nag-aral, nakita ko siyang nagtatrabaho. Bumibista ako sa hospital kung saan siya nag-duty. Nagkaroon na ako ng idea even before pa ma-offer sa akin itong role na ito."

The other female lead character is played by Agot Isidro. She admits that she also drew upon her own personal experiences for this role. "Exposed ako sa nurses because when my dad was in the hospital, ang tagal niya sa hospital kaya alam ko na iba ang ICU nurse from the emergency nurse. Meron akong overview sa different nurses."

The movie Nars will show the crucial decisions to be made by the lead characters. "For all of them, it's a coming-of-age for all of them kasi yung pag-immerse nila sa mundong hindi sila familiar, dun nila matututunan kung ano yung route na gusto nilang tahakin later on sa pagiging isang nurse," summarizes Adolf.

NARS (2007)

With a majority of nurses opting to work abroad rather than stay in the Philippines, Nars aims to present the advantages and disadvantages of working for one's homeland.

The five lead characters belong to one study group who immerse themselves in a community before they can graduate. As they work on their last year as nursing students, they meet people who make them realize not only their roles as ordinary nurses but as Filipino nurses.

Director: Adolf Alix, Jr.

Screenplay: Agnes de Guzman

Production Company: Carl & Carl Productions

Executive Producer: Carl Balita

Line Producer: Carlo Maceda

Cast: Jennylyn Mercado, Jodi Sta. Maria, Coco Martin, Jon Avila, Jaclyn Jose, Allan Paule, Jeffrey Hidalgo, and Joseph Bitangcol

Ela (Jennylyn Mercado) comes from an impoverished but happy family (composed of Jaclyn Jose, Allan Paule, Jeffrey Hidalgo, and Joseph Bitangcol). Each member makes sacrifices to support her education. In return, Ela sets aside her dreams and takes the course her family chose for her.

Adrinne's (Jodi Sta. Maria) parents are both working abroad. Her mother is a caregiver in Canada while her father is an engineer in Dubai. Thus, they provide her with all the money and material things but fail to give her what she truly longs for—their love and their presence. She, too, wants to work abroad but aims to work in Australia to spite her parents.

Marissa (Agot Isidro) is single and a doctor by profession. Her whole family migrated to the U.S. many years back. She was left behind because she was already over-age when their petition arrived. Now, Marissa wants to join them through legal means. With a heavy heart, she gives up her medical profession and takes up nursing. Marissa is involved in a wrong relationship. Leaving the country will also spell a new start for her. She represents the story of doctors who take up nursing in pursuit of the American dream.

Liam (Jon Avila) dreams of becoming a nurse. His parents are Filipinos who are U.S. citizens. They send him to the Philippines because education is much cheaper here. Liam learns more than the course he pursues. He discovers his roots and meets Ela, the love of his life.

Noel (Coco Martin) is gay and proud of it. He enrolled in nursing because it is the "in" thing to do. He soon comes to love the profession, especially since it will become his key to becoming a "blushing bride" someday. He intends to apply in Europe where gay marriages are allowed.

Nars is a major film independently produced by Carl & Carl Productions. It is expected to premiere on October 24, in time for the Philippine Nurses' Convention in Cagayan de Oro, which will be attended by around 2,000 nurses.
